"Watching them, they had no preconceived notions of what is, was, or should be" even though there were 'Artists' trying to tell them, LOL. Between the internet and public libraries arts education should not have to rely on schools to teach anything about it. If a person is interested in anything, let alone the arts, there is nothing in this country that should prevent them from learning about it, if they truly want to.

Be careful what you wish for! Remember, quite a few people did not like what Deb Rockman had to say, and even Matt did not like the things I said about Deb's opinion. One of his 'friends' even went to the extreme as trying to label me as 'threatening'. Freedom of speech is one of the greatest things about our country, but most people only want to hear it when you agree with them ...

Why would you not like everyone getting to judge your art? As an artist I would think that the greatest hope you could have would be to get as many people to see your creations as possible. I have no worries about my work being judged by anyone; man, woman, or child. The more people that see it the better! I don't create the things that I do just to have them hang in my house for my own enjoyment, that would be selfish on my part. You say 'masses' like it's a dirty word ...

The 'art community' has a hard time reaching the 'average Joe' because of their continued 'desire' to be seen as 'professionals' to the point of coming off as 'holier-than-thous'. It's something that I think Matt and Deb Rockman can't seem to understand, and why so many people see them as 'art snobs'. If art can not survive on its own, then like an other enterprise, it deserves to die. As Thomas Jefferson said;"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical." And that's just what we are doing if we let public funds prop up any 'art community' that seeks to survive on anything other than its own clientele. If the 'average Joe' sees nothing of redeeming value in the art that any 'community' produces, then he and others should not be forced to pay for others 'propagation of opinions'. I say this as an artist and a member of the Grand Rapids Community. I produce art. I sell art. If there comes a time when I can no longer sell my art, then I should not expect someone who does not like my art to pay for it with their hard earned money and effort. That would be criminal and tyrannical. A fellow artist has explained it possible better than I: <a href="http://www.tracyfineart.com/blog/?p=296" target="_blank">http://www.tracyfineart.com/blog/?p=296</a>

Here is another 'threatening' comment: "Deb has some points, if this were the normal run-of-the-mill kind of art contest where something like this could win: <a href="http://www.debrockman.com/waging/*****.html" target="_blank">http://www.debrockman.com/waging/*****.html</a> . However, this is not your art teacher's, or professor's, kind of contest, where someone with a PhD judges what is and is not 'Art'. This is a better version of 'American Idol' made for the art world, where anyone and everyone can judge for themselves, instead of having a 'professional' tell them just what 'Art' is. Deb has complained in the past that the people of this region, and town, don't seem to have the 'courage' to buy her works. Most of the people I know who are not 'professional' artists or critics would find it hard to explain why they bought a wonderfully drawing of a dog with a derogatory word covering most of the picture. ArtPrize is not the Oscars of the art world, it's more like the People's Choice Awards, and to try to make it into the Oscars is to go against the spirit of the contest.

Her statement about being a professional was elitist, and that is something most people can not swallow, along with her work. Art is what it is, no mater if the viewer likes it or not. It doesn't matter is it was created by a 'professional', an amateur, or a five year old kid: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Kid_Could_Paint_T..."" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Kid_Could_Paint_T...</a>

Here is a sample of one of my supposed 'threatening' comments: "Actually, I can't believe I'm doing this but, Deb's art is very good. It's when she tries to slap her views on it and hit the viewer over the head with her political statements, like this: <a href="http://www.debrockman.com/waging/*****.html" target="_blank">http://www.debrockman.com/waging/*****.html</a> that it destroys her pieces. Could be why she doesn't sell much art and has complained publicly that there are not many people in GR that are 'brave enough' to own her pieces. Like someone in their right mind would hang that anywhere, let alone their house ... " Wow! I'd be shacking in my sandals if I were Deb ....

It's funny that 'Jane Vanderlaan' complains about "anonymous posting" since it seems she posted on that forum as 'localart', LOL!!!! Read for yourself and see if you do not agree it's possible: <a href="http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/artprize/Could_GR_become_joke_of_art_world#idc-cover" target="_blank">http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/artprize/Could_GR_becom...</a> what a hypocrite ................

For those interested, MrPatulski had several comments on that forum, as well: "Thank you Deb Rockman for stepping up and speaking truth to the the organizers of ArtPrize. It has been a great thing for everyone but the Artists, who like doctors, lawyers and athletes have a professional practice. Anyone can show creativity but few make Art just as few individuals can bat .400 or present a case to the Supreme Court.
To call someone an elitist simply because they finished school, worked hard, continue to improve themselves and wish to raise an issue of concern for their community, calmly and in an articulate manner is frankly inappropriate and rude. Would you talk to your parents or children in such a manner, a pastor or a police officer? No. Make your point on the merits, with your real name or go home, you lack the ability to play with others."

To which someone else made this point: "No, this art professor is an embarassment to the the GR community. When Matisse and Picasso and Monet 's works were first shown, they were mocked and laughed at by the art establishment of the time.
Art is a subjective experience. No one group 'owns' what 'art' is. She is one of the many academic snobs (those that cannot do, teach?) who assumes they are the true owners of culture. They are not. The creative arts can thrive with or without academia. I would have preferred NO contest, just an art show, as I dont think that art should be contested. Nonetheless, this lady needs to get off her high horse. She is a laughingstock." And that person was NOT me ....
